The Baltimore Museum of Art has hired Asma Naeem as chief curator, Andaleeb Badiee Banta as senior curator of prints, drawings, and photographs, and Virginia Anderson as curator of American art.

The chief curator position is new at the BMA. It replaces the deputy director of curatorial affairs role, which was held by Jay Fisher. He is now director of Matisse studies.

Naeem is a specialist in American art and contemporary Islamic art, and, most recently, she was curator of prints, drawings, and media arts at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. She worked on two ongoing exhibitions at the NPG—“UnSeen: Our Past in a New Light, Ken Gonzales-Day and Titus Kaphar” and “Black Out: Silhouettes Then and Now.” As chief curator, she will oversee the BMA’s collection of 95,000 objects and lead the staff of curators, registrars, and conservators.

Banta hails from the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College in Ohio, where she was curator of European and American art. Anderson was previously an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland College Institute of Art, and she has also worked as an assistant curator of American art at the Harvard Art Museums.

Christopher Bedford, director of the BMA, said in a statement, “We are committed to taking intentional steps towards evolving into an institution that emphasizes equity, excellence, and relevance in all phases of the work we do as a museum, not only for our Baltimore community, but to serve as a model for best museum practices nationwide. Asma, Andaleeb, and Virginia will be instrumental in carrying out the museum’s new vision and we are thrilled to add their energy, ideas, and expertise to our curatorial team.”

Update, August 15: Information about the chief curator and deputy director of curatorial affairs positions has been added.
