June officially became Black Music Month in 1979, just two decades after the Motown Sound emerged and changed the way we looked at music forever.  The Motown story inspires many people because of the impact these talented Black musicians had on musical history. Though we celebrate Black music history at Hitsville U.S.A. every day, we will never forget these five exciting moments!

Smokey Robinson gifting a “miracle” to four lucky visitors
How cool was it when we gave away tickets to Smokey Robinson’s June 10 concert at the Music Hall in Detroit? We are so grateful for every Motown lover who came to Hitsville U.S.A. for our fun trivia game. We heard from the lucky ticket winners that the concert was amazing!

Beyonce, Jay-Z and Blue Ivy visiting us before her Detroit concert
Black Music Month really heated up when the musical family of Beyonce, Jay-Z and Blue Ivy took a tour at Motown Museum before Beyonce’s sold out show at Ford Field on June 14! The best part was the shout out Beyonce gave Motown Museum at the concert. We are so happy we were able to share the birthplace of Motown Records with the Carter family.

The Formation Tour having hours of fun at Hitsville U.S.A.
The day before the Carter family stopped by the Museum, Beyonce’s entire tour crew came by. We’re talking dancers, management, makeup artist, hair stylist and her renowned background singers, The Mamas! Since we are typically closed on Mondays, their tour was extended to two hours due to many interjections of singing and dancing by the crew. It was such a fun time.

Spoken word carrying our tune through Motown Mic’s Grand Finale
Our Motown Mic series wrapped up this month, and the spoken word performed was all about the musical and entrepreneurial genius of Motown. The powerful words that bounced off the walls of the Garden Theater on June 24 left the audience speechless, as the 10 finalists shared poetically how Motown moved them. Though the series focuses on spoken word, we had the pleasure of hearing live music from our host Jessica Care Moore and her quartet band.
