The fifth edition of the Out in the Open mural project returns to Aalborg, Denmark this spring and summer, providing an amazing street art experience to as many people as possible. Launched by KIRK Gallery in 2014, the festival has enriched the landscape of the city with a range of murals created by some of the world’s most recognized street artists out there.

Creating a growing number of murals in Aalborg contributes to highlighting the city as an art and culture center while simultaneously creating energetic public space for the benefit of all citizens. The gallery’s goal is to open up the world of art to more people than just those visiting the gallery, giving them an idea about what it means to be “living with art”. As in previous editions, the gallery will welcome an amazing roster of street artists, while acknowledging the responsibility that comes with making art in the public.

Participating Artists

This year’s stellar line-up consists of Vhils, Seth, Telmo Miel, Oliver Vernon, Fintan Magee, Joram Roukes and Nils Westergard.

The artist Joram Roukes, a Dutch artist creating reflections of everyday life situations, observed, filtered and reassembled in a collage like way, and the duo Telmo Miel, known for their beautiful and intricate wall paintings, have already created works for the festival.

Both of these artists will also present their studio works at in an exhibition KIRK Gallery at the end of April. After having painted new oil paintings for the entire exhibition Joram Roukes has cut these into small parts, putting them together again in fragmented mosaics. With their latest body of work, Telmo Miel will examine whether our constant impatience and desire for everything to go really fast, at the end leads to something better.

In May, the festival welcomes Oliver Vernon, the guru of modern abstraction drawing upon an incredibly varied pool of influences and Fintan Magee, who often uses personal stories to talk about broader issues like climate change and the migrant crisis. Vhils, best known for his groundbreaking carving technique, in which he removes the surface layers of walls to create stunning portraits, will create a new piece in the city during the month of June.

In August and September, the festival will welcome Seth and Nils Westergard. Seth is best known for his childhood-inspired interventions, through which he incorporates local symbols and subjects from the surroundings, while Nils Westergard creates intricate stencils and murals dealing with intimacy, ego, power, and fragility.
