The inimitable RuPaul, given name is RuPaul Andre Charles, expert on the sashay and projecting joy, is star of a comedy series just purchased by Netflix.

The series, AJ and the Queen features the producer and host of RuPaul’s Drag Race as Ruby Red, a drag queen making her way across the country from club to club in her beat up 1990s RV. Joining Ruby Red on this journey through another side of America is 11-year-old sidekick AJ, a scrappy stowaway, Variety reports.

Teaming Up With Industry Vets

RuPaul, 57, will write and executive produce the show along with Michael Patrick King, who will write and executive produce, according to Variety. King’s company, MPK Productions, will produce the show in conjunction with Warner Bros., according to Variety.

King is co-creator of 2 Broke Girls and was a writer and executive producer for Sex and the City.

Netflix has ordered 10 episodes, Variety reports.

RuPaul, who has served as spokesperson for Mac Cosmetics, is considered the first drag queen supermodel. He also has his own talk show, The RuPaul Show, on VH1.

What you probably didn’t know about RuPaul is that he’s also appeared in a slew of big-screen movies, from Spike Lee’s “Crooklyn” to “The Brady Bunch Movie.”

It’s Been A Long Road

RuPaul is a native of San Diego. After studying performing arts in Atlanta, he made his way to New York, where he became a star in the Big Apple club scene. His 1993 single “Supermodel (You Better Work)” helped him onto the international scene.

Netflix isn’t the only major company helping RuPaul’s star shine even brighter. Hulu reports that it is creating a series based on the drag queen’s life.

In March, RuPaul received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
