Just when we thought Rachel Dolezal couldn’t dig herself any deeper the former NAACP chapter president is facing 15 years in prison for welfare fraud and perjury among other charges that stem from her habit of avoiding the truth.
According to reports, Rachel Dolezal (aka Nkechi Diallo) caught the attention of investigators at the Department of Social and Health Service (DSHS) in Washington after news of her book deal surfaced. Court documents claim that she received $8,747 in food assistance, as well as $100 in childcare assistance between August 2015 and November 2017.
At the time, Dolezal had been reporting her income as being under $500 per month even though investigators discovered deposits to her bank account totaling $83,924 for those months.
“The state of Washington seeks prosecution and restitution in this matter. In addition, the Department requests Nkechi Diallo be disqualified from receiving Food Assistance for at least a 12 month period for breaking a Food Assistance rule on purpose. This is known as an Intentional Program Violation,” says the court documents.
According to the documents, Dolezal did submitted a “change of circumstance” to DSHS, insisting she received a one-tie payment of $20,000 in October 2017, but failed to make mention of any additional earnings.
She has been charged with 1st Degree Theft by Welfare Fraud, Perjury in the 2nd Degree, and False Verification for Public Assistance. If convicted, she faces up to 15 years behind bars.
For someone with so many secrets to protect, Rachel Dolezal hasn’t been doing a good job of keeping a low profile considering she recently starred in the Netflix documentary The Rachel Divide. In the film, DOlezal made several references to the fact that she was having a hard time finding work and relied on her in-home hair salon to pay her bills.
