Now that her divorce is final, singer Jill Scott wants any potential suitors to know that her standards are not up for debate.
Tuesday, the 41-year-old took to her Instagram account to post lessons she’s learned from past relationships, which include knowing her worth and never dating a man based on his “potential” again – a move many took to be a direct jab at her ex Michael Dobson, who she described in their divorce papers as a “mooch.”
The meme entitled, “5 ways not to be used” lists the following:
1. Believe patterns not apologies
2. Don’t fall in love with potential
3. Believe all “red flags”
4. KNOW YOUR WORTH
5. Don’t lower your standards.
Scott reposted the meme with a caption that reads, “For you. For me. For US. Love You. #beenontheotherside #fdatsht #yourtime #dontwasteit.”
Many of her followers co-signed the sentiments in the post, and shared their own dating rules and experiences too. One message in particular caught her attention and led her to respond.
“@heavensent8The truth is right in front of you at all times ??”
To which she replied, “@[email protected] like a flashing light. Pray for sight and the wisdom to acknowledge it in full.”
“Note – Your standards are not everyone else’s,” she continued. “I won’t do Uncle Daddies – the ones that call every now and then; who see their children a few times a year. THAT is one I just don’t respect. Lack of respect is a dry bobby. I prefer a juicy existence. Ya dig? Or someone who is disrespectful to their parents. Nor can I do broke/broken yet comfortable. Nah. Write YOUR list. Sometimes it’s better to know what you don’t want.”
