The Hollywood Unlocked founder argued that authorities, not Meghan, should be answering questions about the handling of allegations involving Thomas Markle Sr.
Jason Lee accused Piers Morgan of unfairly targeting Meghan Markle during a heated exchange about allegations involving her estranged father. The debate followed renewed attention to her family estrangement and echoed a 2021 rebuke of Morgan by activist Shola Mos-Shogbamimu.
During the October 26 episode of “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” Morgan questioned what Meghan and Prince Harry had done after being informed of allegations involving Thomas Markle Sr. Lee argued that criminal investigations were the responsibility of authorities, not the couple.
Lee, the founder of Hollywood Unlocked, referenced his own experience of childhood sexual abuse and said Meghan had taken steps to protect her family by distancing herself from her father and keeping her children away from him.
As the exchange grew heated, Lee said “the Black woman doesn’t ever get a break,” arguing that Meghan faces heightened scrutiny because of her race. Morgan challenged that interpretation and said his questions concerned the couple’s response to the warning rather than Meghan’s background.
The disagreement extended to Princess Diana. Lee accused the British press of contributing to her death, while Morgan rejected that characterization, citing the investigation into her fatal 1997 car crash.
Philippine authorities are investigating reports that suspected child sexual abuse material was found among Thomas Markle Sr.’s belongings at his former residence in Cebu. Markle has denied wrongdoing, and no charges have been announced.
Meghan said she received a letter containing disturbing allegations about her father and was assured the claims were being investigated. London’s Metropolitan Police later confirmed it received the letter in January 2019 and passed it to the Sussexes’ office but did not share the allegations with other law enforcement agencies. Meghan’s representatives acknowledged that her earlier recollection placing the letter in 2018 may have been mistaken.
The Met is reviewing its handling of the letter and considering whether to refer the matter to the police watchdog. Jason Lee maintained that investigators should answer questions about the response instead of placing that responsibility on Meghan.
