Federal authorities are investigating after nearly every member of Maryland’s congressional delegation and the state’s elections office received threatening letters containing a mysterious white powder that was later determined to be nontoxic.
The incidents are part of a nationwide series of suspicious mailings targeting lawmakers and election officials just weeks before the Nov. 3 elections.
The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are jointly investigating the letters, which were first reported in Louisiana and Oklahoma before spreading to other states.
Maryland Elections Administrator Jared DeMarinis confirmed that a suspicious letter addressed to his office was intercepted by law enforcement following heightened mail screening procedures.
Both Maryland U.S. senators and at least five of the state’s eight House members confirmed receiving similar mailings.
Rep. Kweisi Mfume received a letter at his Baltimore office and requested a briefing from postal inspectors about the scope of the investigation and security measures being taken.
Rep. Johnny Olszewski’s staff discovered and isolated a suspicious letter before contacting authorities. Rep. Steny Hoyer also reported receiving a letter at his Greenbelt district office.
Rep. Andy Harris’ office said it had not received a letter, while other congressional offices either declined to comment or did not respond.
Federal investigators have not identified who sent the letters or their motive. Although the powder has been deemed nontoxic, authorities have not publicly identified the substance.
DeMarinis said the threats would not discourage election officials from carrying out their responsibilities or ensuring Marylanders can safely participate in the upcoming election.
