Artadia has named the artists EJ Hill and Clarissa Tossin as the winners of the 2018 Los Angeles Artadia Awards. The nonprofit arts organization has awarded each artist $10,000 in unrestricted funds.
Hill, a performance artist, staged endurance performances and installations during his 2015–16 residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem in New York. His work combines imagines alternative histories and new ways of transmitting knowledge, in the process relying on recent events and his own life as reference points.
Drawing inspiration from the utopian design of Brazil’s capital, Brasília, Tossin’s practice examines modernity, globalism, and utopian idealism. Her work focuses on architectural projects in Brazil and Latin America, and the ways they compare to ones in Los Angeles, underscoring the complex relationship that these countries have with the United States.
Finalists for the award included Susu Attar, Andy Robert, and Analia Saban. Curator and Sotheby’s Institute of Art senior fellow Alma Ruiz joined the first round of jurors—Derrick Adams; Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver assistant curator Zoe Larkins; and independent curator Selene Preciado—for the second round of evaluations.
