Daneyal Mahmood Hired as Director of Exhibitions at Rubin Museum of Art -ARTnews

The Rubin Museum of Art in New York, which specializes in the art of the Himalayas, India, and surrounding areas, has brought on Daneyal Mahmood as director of exhibitions.

In the position Mahmood will oversee selecting the museum’s exhibitions and annual theme—the latter being a new practice that began earlier this year with the topic of “The Future.” He currently serves as the director of visual programming at the Watermill Center on Long Island in New York, and will begin his post in mid-August.

The Rubin’s director, Jorrit Britschgi, told ARTnews over the phone of Mahmood’s hiring, “Daneyal has somewhat of an atypical past, with his experience in the field of psychology.” (Mahmood has a who earned a Ph.D. in experimental psychology.) Britschgi continued, “What I foresee is his ability to bring together and work with the permanent collection and mix it up with contemporary art and engagement opportunities, psychology, philosophy, and he really has the intellectual freshness and capacity to bring different players and different disciplines to the table and create a bold and unique experience for our patrons and our visitors.”

Mahmood, said in a release, “The Rubin has no other counterpart in the city; by mixing a permanent collection with contemporary art, psychology, and Buddhist philosophy, there are endless possibilities to create something that other institutions simply can’t offer.”
