R&B singer Chris Brown avoided prison time Monday after being charged with an eight-month suspended sentence for beating a music producer with an alcohol bottle in a London club.
The 37-year-old artist faced up to three years in prison after pleading guilty to affray in July for the assault at a private London club in February 2023. His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray.
CCTV footage of the incident was shown to the court, and the judge explained how Brown hit the producer, later identified as Abe Diaw. The incident showed the star striking Diaw in the head with a tequila bottle. Diaw was later hospitalized for head and knee treatment.
“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous, it carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained,” Judge Tony Baumgartner said in Southwark Crown Court, according to AP News.
Despite the serious attack, the judge said Brown would not receive a custodial sentence due to him pleading guilty, along with other “mitigating circumstances.” He also acknowledged the star’s previous convictions but said he maintained a clean record in recent years.
Brown has a history of assault, including a felony conviction in 2009 of his then girlfriend, Rihanna. He has also been arrested in several states due to other altercations but was not charged. He was also arrested in 2019 in Paris on suspicion of rape but was released without being charged.
In return for Brown’s guilty plea in the attack, prosecutors dropped the assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and having an offensive weapon charges.
