Sorry Candyman fans, but we have some bad news. Filmmaker Nia DaCosta recently confessed the highly anticipated horror film slated to debut right before Halloween won’t release until 2021.
Due to the pandemic, many films are being put on hold so it looks as if Candyman is in good company. Over the weekend DaCosta took to Twitter to announce why the film won’t simply appear on the small screen.
“We made Candyman to be seen in theaters,” wrote DaCosta. “Not just for the spectacle but because the film is about community and stories–how they shape each other, how they shape us. It’s about the collective experience of trauma and joy, suffering and triumph, and the stories we tell around it.”
In case you have been under a rock, the now 2021 film is the fourth addition to the Candyman franchise. The slasher movie follows a man with a hook for a hand known as Candyman who typically stays hidden until someone summons him by calling his name three times in a mirror. Once summoned, the tall Black man in a leather trench coat usually slashes his victims to death.
She continued to say, “We wanted the horror and humanity of Candyman to be experienced in a collective, a community, so we’re pushing Candyman to next year, to ensure that everyone can see the film, in theaters, and share in that experience.”
The film stars Teyonah Parris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Colman Domingo, and Vanessa Williams who appeared in the 1992 original Candyman. DaCosta collaborated with Win Rosenfeld and Jordan Peele to write the script and it’s being produced by Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions.
