My journey into art collecting began unexpectedly when I visited a New York museum in 2021. While browsing the gift shop, I came across The Black Market: A Guide to Art Collecting by Charles Moore. That book was a turning point. This book was transformative because I never grew up in an environment discussing art collecting or how it can be seen as a financial investment. Moore’s insights opened up an entirely new world for me.
It wasn’t until 2024 that I purchased my first piece: a powerful work by artist Leroy Campbell, titled Red Dress, I discovered at an estate sale in Washington, DC. I’m still incredibly proud of that acquisition.
Along the way, I’ve learned valuable lessons working towards building an art collection—from budget, maintenance needs for art, logistical aspects of transporting art, and more. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or already collecting art, I hope to share insights and book resources that can guide and inspire your path through the self-guided workbook.
Some topics Covered in the Workbook:
Motivations for art collecting
Discover which art mediums resonate with you
Choose how you prefer to buy art
