Curated by Jeffreen M. Hayes, Ph.D., AFRICOBRA: Nation Time will be the first major exhibition of the collective’s work in Europe. Founded on the South Side of Chicago in 1968 by a collective of young Black artists, AFRICOBRA sought to create a Transnational Black Aesthetics characterized by vibrant, “cool-ade” colors, bold text, shine and positive images of Black people. Understanding the potential power visual art has to communicate deep meaning on multiple layers, the collective significantly shaped the visual voice of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 70s.
The next chapter of AFRICOBRA: Messages to the People, which premiered at MOCA North Miami, the exhibition will bring together more than 40 works by artists such as Jeff Donaldson, Gerald Williams, Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu, Napoleon Jones-Henderson, and Nelson Stevens, accompanied by historic documentation, archival photographs and other ephemera.
Presented by bardoLA and originated and supported by the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, the exhibition will take place at Ca’Faccanon in Venice from May 11th until November 24th, 2019.
