The Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, has named as its new director Susan R. Ewing, who has been the school’s interim leader since August. She succeeds Christopher Scoates, who left Cranbrook last June to direct the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
A metalsmith and educator, Ewing joined Cranbrook after more than three decades as a professor and administrator at Miami University in Ohio. Over the course of her career, she has also taught at the Academy of Art, Architecture, and Design in Prague and the Royal College of Art in London.
Ewing’s artworks are part of the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Alessi Museum in Crusinallo, Italy, among other institutions. Notably, she collaborated with the late Czech sculptor Vratislav Karel Novák on two public art projects in Cincinnati, Ohio and Solingen, Germany, respectively.
In a statement, Ewing said, “This is an exceptional place with a distinctive legacy that is unmatched anywhere in the world. The passion for Cranbrook that has been demonstrated by our staff, faculty, students, and alumni and the synergy we share convinced me that this is the right place for me now and into the future.”
Dominic DiMarco, the president of Cranbrook Educational Community, added, “In the few months she has been here, Susan has made remarkable progress at the Academy. We look forward to her upcoming initiatives and have full confidence in her guidance.”
