The Lahore Biennale in Pakistan has selected Hoor Al Qasimi as the curator of its second edition, set to open in 2020. The first edition, which opened earlier this year, focused on art from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India. A release noted that Al Qasimi plans to widen the biennial’s curatorial purview in the future to include art from West Asia and the Middle East.
Al Qasimi is currently president and director of the Sharjah Art Foundation, which facilitates a biennial of its own in the United Arab Emirates, and president of the International Biennial Association. Her curatorial credits include retrospectives for Robert Breer and Hassan Sharif. In 2003, she curated the Sharjah Biennial, and in 2015, she organized the United Arab Emirates Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. She is also a board member at MoMA PS1, the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Ashkal Alwan, and Darat Al Funun.
In a statement, Al Qasimi said of the Lahore Biennale, “The first edition proved how even a new biennial can be both a means to engage the local and regional community while offering an internationally visible platform for artists and the cultural life of a city. I look forward to working closely with the foundation to curate a program that celebrates the richness of artistic practice in South Asia and the importance of strengthening cultural ties between this region, the Middle East, and the broader international arts landscape.”
