An official confronts possible ejection in Texas, an Acton advertisement sparks attention, consumers face a meat recall, and the search intensifies for a missing teen.
Sybil Wilkes delivered another fast-moving edition of “What We Need to Know,” covering political flashpoints in Texas and Ohio, a national food safety alert, and an urgent search for a missing Black teenager in California. Here is what you need to know.
A Black conservative social media influencer says she was removed without explanation from a Texas campaign event for Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton. The woman, who goes by the name Thelma Louise, produces political commentary on TikTok. She said she was escorted off the premises after being told that the campaign manager had requested her exit. No reason for the removal was given at the time. The incident raises questions about how campaigns engage Black conservative voices, including those who support them.
In Ohio, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dr. Amy Acton is publicly condemning a campaign ad that features her estranged biological mother speaking out against her candidacy. Acton said she has had no contact with her mother since 1978. That separation followed childhood sexual abuse by her stepfather, which resulted in criminal charges. Acton, a physician, faces Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in the race for governor. The ad has added a deeply personal dimension to one of the most closely watched contests on the ballot.
Federal safety officials have announced a national recall of nearly 1.6 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. The voluntary recall by Cayenne Foods stems from temperature control failures during warehouse storage. Affected items include hot dogs, bacon, brisket, and poultry sausages produced between late March and early October. The products were shipped widely across the country. Families should check refrigerators and freezers, compare labels against the recall notice, and throw out or return any affected items.
From the Black and Missing file: On Wednesday, authorities and the California Highway Patrol activated an Ebony Alert for 16-year-old Miracle KK Daniella Anderson. California’s Ebony Alert system is designed to help locate missing Black youth and young women, who are often overlooked in national coverage. Miracle went missing on October 7 and was last seen at Berkeley High School. She is described as a Black female with a light complexion, standing 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 124 pounds, with long brown hair and hazel eyes. Her photo is available in the “What We Need to Know” newsletter. Anyone with information about her whereabouts is urged to contact the Emeryville Police Department or the Black and Missing Foundation. Sharing her picture across your networks can help bring her home.
