The NBA returns with three opening-day games, new rules, blockbuster roster changes and more ways to watch the 2026-27 season.
The NBA is officially back! The 2026-27 regular season tips off Tuesday, October 20, with three nationally televised games featuring some of basketball’s biggest stars.
This season brings blockbuster roster changes, updated officiating priorities and a new NBA Draft Lottery system taking effect in 2027. Fans also have several television networks and streaming services to navigate throughout the season.
Here’s everything you need to know as the NBA returns.
The NBA opens its season with a tripleheader on NBC and Peacock.
The opening matchup features two Eastern Conference contenders as Boston visits Detroit. The Pistons finished last season with the East’s best record, while the Celtics enter with a revamped roster.
Philadelphia and New York headline the evening, with LeBron James making his regular-season debut for the 76ers. The defending champion Knicks will also celebrate their 2026 NBA title with a ring and banner ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The night concludes with Oklahoma City visiting San Antonio. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama headline a rematch of last season’s seven-game Western Conference Finals.
The NBA enters the season with updated officiating priorities designed to improve player safety and more consistently enforce existing rules.
Officials will place additional emphasis on flopping, dangerous closeouts that threaten a shooter’s landing space and offensive players using their off-arm to create illegal contact. Illegal screens and freedom of movement will also receive increased attention.
Players called for flopping can receive a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul, resulting in one free throw for the opposing team. That penalty is already part of the NBA rulebook, but enforcement remains a focus this season.
One of the biggest changes comes away from the court.
Beginning with the 2027 NBA Draft, the league will introduce a new 3-2-1 Lottery system designed to discourage teams from intentionally losing games.
The lottery will expand from 14 to 16 teams. Most teams that miss both the playoffs and Play-In Tournament will receive three lottery balls, while the three teams with the worst records will receive only two. Other eligible teams will receive fewer balls based on their postseason results.
The new system also includes restrictions intended to prevent teams from repeatedly benefiting from losing seasons, including limits on consecutive No. 1 selections using their own draft picks.
The NBA landscape looks dramatically different following an offseason filled with blockbuster transactions.
Here are six notable stars wearing new uniforms this season:
Those moves could significantly reshape the playoff picture in both conferences, particularly in the Eastern Conference, where Philadelphia and Miami added established superstars.
Watching NBA basketball requires navigating several television networks and streaming platforms.
The league’s national media partners are ESPN/ABC, NBCUniversal and Amazon Prime Video, with additional games available through NBA TV, League Pass and local broadcasters.
Here’s where fans can find games throughout the season:
Fans should know that NBA League Pass does not provide live access to every game. Local and nationally televised matchups can be subject to blackout restrictions.
NBC and ABC games may also be available free over the air with a television antenna. Fans who already subscribe to cable or a live-TV streaming package may have access to several of the national networks without purchasing separate subscriptions.
The NBA also offers a free Tap to Watch feature through NBA.com and its app to help fans identify which service carries each game.
Cleveland Cavaliers fans will have to wait two additional days for their team’s regular-season debut.
The Cavaliers open the 2026-27 season Thursday, October 22, on the road against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
That means Cleveland begins its season against a familiar face in LeBron James, who returns to the Eastern Conference following his departure from the Lakers.
The Cavaliers will play their home opener Saturday, October 24, against the Brooklyn Nets.
