Keke gets the former VP talking about Pilates, Spades, Tupac Shakir, and the midterms.
Keke Palmer and former VP Kamala Harris sat down for a catch-up on the Oct. 13 episode of Baby, This Is Keke Palmer. The two powerhouse women had so much to discuss.
They first sat down for a similar conversation in 2023. Life has changed for both women since then. Former VP Harris went on to become the first Black woman nominated for president by a major party. We now know the outcome of that difficult election and what has happened since. But we have not heard former VP Harris reflect on it directly in a forum like this with Keke.
The “Akeelah and the Bee” actress took advantage of the opportunity. Keke didn’t hold back, firing questions at former VP Harris that many of us have been thinking about.
Keke also shared her feelings about the country’s and the world’s current political state while bringing levity. If there’s one thing Keke Palmer is going to do, it’s make us laugh.
Their conversation flowed from card games and Pilates to family stories, motherhood and the midterms with candid moments in between. Here are eight things we learned, some about former VP Harris and some about Keke herself.
(Spoiler Alert: Former VP Harris has not decided whether she’ll run for president in 2028.)
Keke and former VP Harris had been talking about chess and her competitive streak. That led Keke to ask whether former VP Harris played spades. She said she did and shared her love of card games. Then she turned the question back to Keke: Had she ever played bid whist?
Keke admitted she hadn’t learned it yet, joking that the game was “for the OGs.” At family reunions and church cookouts, bid whist can be a rite of passage right alongside spades. The matriarchs know the rules, and they usually know who’s playing them well.
When Keke asked what an ideal day without a schedule would look like, former VP Harris pictured walks with Doug and Sunday family dinner. She also mentioned that she has been doing Pilates.
Keke shared that she’s a Pilates instructor and invited former VP Harris to work out with her. They compared reformer and mat Pilates, then talked about gear, strength and well-being. Former VP Harris connected the practice to empowerment and said she was discovering muscles she hadn’t been exercising.
Keke’s personal questions also brought former VP Harris back to her dance days. She shared that she belonged to a jazz ballet group called Midnight Magic and was all about the fringe.
We didn’t get the full story on the group, but that detail gave us a glimpse of her life before politics. It also has us picturing a Dancing With the Stars appearance and wondering if we’ve found the source of that two-step.
Keke brings fashion into her podcast conversations, and this sit-down gave both women a chance to show their style. Former VP Harris wore a relaxed burgundy pantsuit with a single-button jacket, a dark top and black pumps. Her shoulder-length blowout completed the look.
Keke wore an oversized blazer as a dress, with heels high enough to show off her legs. Her signature copper-red unit fell in soft waves with a side part. Both women chose relaxed suiting and heels, then made the looks their own.
Keke asked the question many of us have wondered about: Is former VP Harris planning to run for president in 2028? She said she hasn’t decided, then brought the conversation back to the midterms.
“’28 won’t matter if we don’t do ’26 right,” she said. Former VP Harris is traveling around the country to encourage people to vote. She also raised concerns about redistricting and the effect it could have on Black political representation.
When Keke asked what people should know about former VP Harris’ work in office, she pointed to postpartum health care and Medicaid coverage.
Former VP Harris said that when she became vice president, only three states had extended Medicaid coverage for postpartum care beyond 60 days. She described her push as a “campaign of shame” to encourage states to extend coverage to 12 months. Arkansas remains the exception.
The conversation turned to how people keep in touch. Former VP Harris said she still likes to call because she wants to hear people’s voices: “I call. I like to call.”
Her family would rather she text, but Keke understood the appeal. She shared that she saved a voicemail former VP Harris left her. We would save that one, too.
When Keke asked who she would cook for, living or dead, and what she would make, former VP Harris chose her mother. She remembered her mother’s advice: “learn how to cook.”
Former VP Harris did, then cooked for her mother after she was diagnosed with cancer. Keke’s question brought out a tender family memory in a conversation that made room for personal stories alongside politics.
