Tate in London has named the shortlisted artists for its 2018 Turner Prize. The nominated artists will present work in an exhibition opening at Tate Britain in September, with a winner to be announced during a broadcast on the BBC in December. Each shortlisted group or person for the prize, which recognizes one artist working in the United Kingdom each year, will receive £5,000 (about $7,000); the winner will receive £25,000 ($35,000).
Alex Farquharson, the director of Tate Britain and the chair of the prize’s jury, said in a statement, “Following a thoughtful and rigorous debate, this year’s jury has chosen an outstanding group of artists, all of whom are tackling the most pressing political and humanitarian issues of today. This shortlist highlights how important the moving image has become in exploring these debates.”
Other jury members included Oliver Basciano, the international editor of ArtReview; Elena Filipovic, the director of the Kunsthalle Basel; Lisa Le Feuvre, the director of the Holt-Smithson Foundation; and the writer Tom McCarthy.
The shortlisted artists for the 2018 Turner Prize are:
