V. Mitch McEwen has been appointed the 2018–19 curator of IdeasCity, the New Museum’s urban reconstruction initiative. As curator, McEwen, who is an assistant professor at Princeton University School of Architecture and the cofounder of A(n) Office architectural design studio, will oversee this cycle’s programming and the lay the groundwork for the forthcoming 2020–21 one.

Each year, IdeasCity takes place in a different site. Throughout the program’s run, a think tank of community leaders and activists convenes for creative workshops, projects, and exhibitions. These activities are then used to help each host city’s experts identify issues they wish to address. The program culminates in a presentation of the leaders and activists’ work at the IdeasCity presentation, which is held biennially in New York City. This year, IdeasCity will take place in Toronto; the 2019 program will be held in New Orleans.

In a statement, Lisa Phillips, the director of the New Museum and the cofounder of IdeasCity, said, “We are delighted McEwen will join the stellar IdeasCity team at the New Museum for the next two-year cycle. As a practicing urban designer and professor of architecture, she is keenly attuned to the built environment and will bring intellectual rigor to thinking about urban design and planning as we continue to engage with cities who believe in culture’s capacity to affect progress.”
