In addition to being one third of one of hip hop’s greatest collectives, Wyclef Jean is an accomplished solo artist, musician and certified health nut, always on the lookout for new and fun ways to get in shape.

Here, the Grammy winner chats with EBONY about Miami’s upcoming Propel Co: Labs Fitness Festival, where he’ll be performing during a Vixen workout hosted by Janet Jones. He also gets into his own routine and encouraging others to do right by their bodies.

How did you connect with Propel for the Propel Co: Labs Fitness Festival?

If you’ve followed me for the past 20 years, you know that I’m a maniac when it comes to finding the future of fitness, and that’s how I found them. I’m sure you remember this, but if you look online, one of my most shameful pictures is me on a Ducati looking pretty ripped up wearing spandex.

That was the era where I was doing a lot of weights. So now, I wanna go super-light because I’m back on tour and want to move a lot.

What would you say is a typical workout routine for you now?

For me, right now, it’s all about cardio. A typical workout would be 30 minutes of cardio and another 30 minutes of light-weight reps.

I always try to encourage people, and 30 minutes is good to get the heart going. You don’t have to be working out for hours or trying to lift a thousand pounds. Repetition is what’s important to develop good habits. And drink a ton of water.
