ESPN’s exclusive coverage of The Championships, Wimbledon will come to a conclusion with the Gentlemen’s Championship on Sunday, July 15, at 9 a.m. ET when No. 12 Novak Djokovic seeks his 13th Major title and fourth at Wimbledon against No. 8 Kevin Anderson who outlasted John Isner in the semifinal, winning 26-24 in the fifth set. Chris Fowler will call the match with John and Patrick McEnroe. The match will be seen later Sunday on ABC at 3 p.m. and at 8 p.m. on ESPNEWS and on ESPN2 at midnight.
- 12 Novak Djokovic: 31, 6’2” and from Serbia. 12 Major titles including three at Wimbledon. Has won five of six matches with Anderson, including twice at Wimbledon – 2015 Round of 16 and 2011 First Round. Anderson’s win was in their first meeting, Miami 2008.
- 8 Kevin Anderson: 32, 6’8” (tallest finalist ever at Wimbledon), 2017 US Open finalist, falling to Rafael Nadal. Best previous Wimbledon result: fourth round three times (2014, ’15, ’17). The native of South Africa played three seasons for the University of Illinois. He has four career titles and hit a peak in ranking early this year at No. 7.
Gentlemen’s Semifinal Overnight Rating up 25%, Best in Three Years
ESPN’s 10-hour Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Semifinals telecast – the remarkable serving duel between Kevin Anderson and John Isner won by Anderson 26-24 in the fifth set followed by three sets of Rafael Nadal vs. Novak Djokovic – earned a 1.0 overnight rating. That is 25% higher than 2017 (0.8) despite the telecast being extended four hours (8 a.m. – 6 p.m.). Also, it is the highest overnight rating ESPN has earned for that day of the Wimbledon fortnight since 2015 (1.0).
ESPN+ on the ESPN App
Beyond Centre Court, Courts 1, 3 and 12 are available on the ESPN App with the new ESPN+ service, making its Major tennis debut. Play – which includes a number of finals: Boys’ Singles, Girls’ Doubles, Wheelchair Singles and Doubles and Invitational (seniors) – begins as early as 6 a.m.
Breakfast at Wimbledon at 8 a.m.
The Gentlemen’s Championship will be preceded by Breakfast at Wimbledon at 8 a.m., hosted by Chris McKendry. The show will include:
- A deep dive preview of the Gentlemen’s Championship.
- An interview with Novak Djokovic to discuss his career and success at this year’s Wimbledon. Is he “back”?
- A review of Saturday’s Ladies’ Championship and discussion of what’s ahead for both finalists.
- The sights and sounds of the Fortnight
- A tribute to the late Dick Enberg, a friend of Wimbledon, the sport and ESPN.
ESPN3’s “DataCenter” Makes Wimbledon Debut
ESPN3, online and streaming live on the ESPN App, will offer an additional feed – “Wimbledon DataCenter” – for the Gentlemen’s Championships. “DataCenter,” as seen at last year’s US Open, has a column of match stats on the left edge with more in a box along the bottom of the screen; the match telecast will fill the rest of the screen.
