Pictures at an Exhibition presents images of one notable show every weekday.

Today’s show: “Vincent Valdez: Dream Baby Dream” is on view at David Shelton Gallery in Houston through Saturday, November 10. The solo exhibition presents a new series of work depicting scenes and mourners from Muhammad Ali’s funeral. The series is the second installment in a trilogy of work called “The Beginning Is Near.” News of Ali’s death, in 2016, broke as Valdez was completing the first installment, which was recently acquired and put on display by Blanton Museum of Art in Austin. “Months later, during the culmination of the 2016 presidential campaign, [Valdez] found new meaning in the spectacle surrounding Ali’s death,” Ian Alden Russell writes in an essay accompanying the show.
