Victori+Mo, a gallery previously based in Brooklyn, is relocating to Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. The outfit’s new 750-square-foot space on the ground floor of a townhouse at 242 West 22nd Street will open on March 14 with an exhibition of work by Phoenix Lindsey-Hall.
Cofounded by Celine Mo and Ed Victori, Victori+Mo has been housed at 56 Bogart Street in Bushwick since it was established in 2015. The gallery’s roster includes Amie Cunat, Langdon Graves, Leah Guadagnoli, Amanda Martinez, and Samuel Stabler, among other artists.
In an interview with ARTnews, Mo cited the planned L train shutdown—which has since been called off—as a factor for the move. (Victori+Mo’s former space was situated right off the L line’s Morgan Avenue stop.)
“We were growing out of the space a little bit, and I think the L train closing was a pretty big factor because it’s already such a pain trying to get our clients out there,” she said. “[The new space] will have that residential feel, which I think will be different than what people are used to.”
Asked about the recent exodus of various galleries from Chelsea, Mo said that she and Victori are “going against the grain a little bit.”
She quipped that Victori+Mo is “a speck of dust” within the larger ecosystem of Chelsea mega-galleries as it currently exists, and noted that the gallery’s boutique size “allows us to be more risky in terms of the things we want to show.” But, despite the move, the gallery will retain its original character, Mo said. “I want to keep our identity,” she told me. “We really pushed our artists to explore the space in Bushwick, and we want them to keep doing that.”
