Vice President Kamala Harris was warmly received by an enthusiastic crowd of battleground state voters in West Allis, Wisconsin, on July 23, where she delivered her first public speech since launching her presidential campaign.
Harris ignited hope and enthusiasm among the audience by pledging to enhance abortion accessibility, address gun violence, and protect the Affordable Care Act, legislation launched in 2010, that made affordable health insurance available and more accessible to millions of Americans according to VOA News.
Harris warned how Donald Trump could threaten to untether all of the Democrat’s success in the aforementioned areas with his Project 2025 Agenda. Led by the conservative think tank group, the Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 seeks to outline a vision for federal governance by the Republican Party characterized by decisive steps to dismantle several areas, including stripping back LGBTQIA+ and abortion rights, changing federal policies to meet party needs and cutting social security and Medicare, according to Harris’ X post.
“America has tried these failed economic policies before, but we are not going back,” the first Black and South Asian V.P. said as the crowd gave the politician a standing ovation and shouted, “We’re not going back!”
The 59-year-old Democrat, who would become the first female president in history added, “Donald Trump wants to take our country backward. Do we want to live in a country of freedom, compassion, and rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear, and hate?”
Following President Joe Biden’s endorsement of Kamala Harris after his withdrawal, Democrats rallied behind the California native. According to an Associated Press survey, Harris has secured 2,688 delegates, well surpassing the 1,976 delegates needed for nomination, with 54 delegates still undecided. Grassroots supporters also poured over $80 million into her campaign within a day of her announcing her presidential bid.
While Harris is now the presumptive nominee, her path to the presidency still requires continued diligence. Convention delegates retain the freedom to vote for their preferred candidate at the August convention or during a potential virtual roll call before the Democratic National Convention scheduled to take place in Chicago.
