The organization Queer|Art, which offers support and mentorship to LGBTQI artists, has awarded its 2018 $10,000 Queer|Art|Prize for Sustained Achievement to Vaginal Davis and announced the following four finalists for its award for recent work: Elegance Bratton, Rafa Esparza, keyon gaskin, and Xandra Ibarra.

Davis is a performance artist and experimental filmmaker who centers genderqueer, black, latino, and gay identity political themes in her work. A release announcing the news said that Davis “disrupts hetero and homonormativity” and is being recognized for her punk works from the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s. She will be presented with her award at Queer|Art’s annual party on November 1st at New York’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Center, where the winner of the $10,000 Recent Work award will be announced.

Bratton is a New York–based photographer, filmmaker, and author whose work My House (2018) has landed him on the list of finalists. Other nominated works include Esparza’s cumbre: look as far as you can see in every direction–north and south, east and west (2018); gaskin’s [a swatch of lavender]: a self portrait (2018); and Ibarra’s The Hook Up/Displacement/Barhopping/Drama Tour (2017).
