For its third edition, Untitled Art, San Francisco has appointed Juana Berrío as guest curator of its Special Projects sector. Berrío will also organize a new Books & Editions section at the fair, which is slated to take place from January 18 to 20 at Pier 35 on the Embarcadero.
Berrío, an independent curator, has worked at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the New Museum in New York, and she has curated exhibitions and events at SOMArts and Minnesota Street Projects in San Francisco. She also co-founded and directed the San Francisco gallery and bookstore Kiria Koula.
She said in a statement, “Since Untitled Art, San Francisco launched in 2017, it has been a very valuable addition to the cultural landscape of San Francisco and the Bay Area at large. Not only has the fair brought a rich selection of galleries and a wide range of art from around the world, it has also presented cutting edge programs and projects that represent what is happening in today’s world.”
The artists and collectives included in Special Projects, who were selected by Berrío and Untitled Art executive director Manuela Mozo, are Marc Camille Chaimowicz (presented by Andrew Kreps); Ann Hamilton (Anglim Gilbert Gallery); Miguel Arzabe (Minnesota Street Projects Studio Program); IC-98 (Makasiini Contemporary); Postcommodity (San Francisco Art Institute); Geoffrey Pugen (MKG127); and Kuang-Yu Tsui (Chinese Culture Center San Francisco). Highlights include Chaimowicz’s Autumn 2015, a large-scale sculptural collage, Arzabe’s Last Weaving (2018), which is made of paper ephemera and references Andean textile traditions, and Tsui’s Exercise Living (2017–18) video series.
