Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum in Waltham, Massachusetts, has named Tuesday Smillie the 2018–19 winner of its Ruth Ann and Nathan Perlmutter Artist-in-Residence Award. Through the award, the Brooklyn-based artist will have a solo exhibition, which is set to open on September 7, as well as a residency, at the museum.
Smillie’s work deals with the relationship between individuals and groups, often with an eye toward trans-feminist politics. Drawing on the work of creators as disparate as the science-fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin and the musician and artist Yoko Ono, Smillie is best known for her pieces that resemble protest banners—one reading “Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries” was included in the recent exhibition “Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon” at the New Museum in New York. (Smillie currently has a solo show at the Participant Inc gallery in New York.)
Luis Croquer, the Rose Art Museum’s chief curator and director, called Smillie’s artist-in-residence award a “pivotal moment in her career.” Past recipients of the prize include Barry McGee, Dana Schutz, Mika Rottenberg, Mary Weatherford, and Jennie C. Jones.
