President Donald Trump wasted no time proving that his administration will be one that ushers in a “golden age” of bigotry, white nationalism and right-wing propaganda being forged into policy. According to CNN, on Monday, Trump is set to sign three executive orders that would reshape the U.S. military by stamping out, well, basically any and everything MAGA Republicans consider “woke.” (*gestures widely towards whatever makes white and exhaustingly fragile conservatives uncomfortable*)
The orders are set to come days after Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth — the Army veteran and former Fox News host with no previous history in national defense — was confirmed despite allegations that he abused women and alcohol and Pentagon officials’ concerns over his lack of experience. Ironically, Hegseth has said eliminating DEI from the military is a top priority. (Maybe, just maybe, a nation where the unqualified get to decide who’s qualified isn’t the greatest nation in the world.)
Hegseth’s and Trump’s haste to blindly rid the military of DEI programs had already resulted in the Air Force removing videos that taught personnel about the Tuskegee Airmen and the Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs, which it confirmed it did in order to “fully execute and implement all directives outlined in the Executive Orders issued by the President, ensuring that they are carried out with utmost professionalism, efficiency and in alignment with national security objectives.” The Air Force added the Tuskeegee airmen back to the curriculum following a massive outpouring of outrage. It’s unclear if the WASP lesson has also been reinstated. The videos were eliminated because they were part of a diversity training, which the old white party’s new king and his reverse-DEI defense secretary deem wasteful.
It’s worth mentioning that Trump’s anti-DEI executive orders do more than eliminate initiatives that bring more opportunity to women and people of color, they also hurt the environment and poor, rural communities, which, by the way, represent a huge chunk of his voter base.
From CNN:
But Trump’s Monday order also took aim at “environmental justice” — eliminating positions and assessing spending on projects, including those aimed at poor, rural communities.
Grants approved and under consideration by the Federal Emergency Management Agency show projects from Alaska to Florida, many targeted at helping small communities. They include:
Many of the plans were helped by the Justice40 initiative of former President Joe Biden, which ensured 40% of federal spending on climate and clean energy programs flowed to disadvantaged communities. Billions of dollars, largely through Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, have brought solar to tribal lands, paid for electric school buses to replace gas-powered vehicles, and funded local groups to clean up their pollution-burdened communities.
But, hey, who cares about the planet we live on and the poor MAGA people who thought they were voting in their best interest when there’s important, top-priority work to be done in defense of this great nation like — *checks notes* — banning trans people from the military.
More from CNN:
Trump had banned transgender Americans form serving in the military in 2017 during his first administration, but then-President Joe Biden issued an order in 2021 repealing the ban.
“It can take a minimum of 12 months for an individual to complete treatments after transition surgery, which often involves the use of heavy narcotics. During this period, they are not physically capable of meeting military readiness requirements and require ongoing medical care. This is not conducive for deployment or other readiness requirements,” one of the officials said, citing a fact sheet.
“The implementation [of the ban] is on the DoD regarding specifics,” the official said. In 2018, there were an estimated 14,000 transgender service members in the US military, according to the Palm Center, an independent research institute that has conducted extensive research on sexual minorities in the military.
Barring an entire demographic from serving in the military because their hypothetical surgeries might hypothetically take too long is a hell of a way to say: Yeah, we’re raging bigots over here, and under Trump, our justifications don’t really need to be plausible. MAGA!
So, one executive order to ban diversity into oblivion, one order to ban trans people who wish to serve their country — so, what’s the third?
Ahh yes — while trans people and people who teach diversity are getting the boot, Trump’s third executive order directs Hegseth to reinstate all active and reserve service members who were previously discharged for failing to get the COVID-19 vaccine. (We were so focused on the anti-trans bigotry and the delusional “anti-white racism” propaganda, we almost forgot about the MAGA-fied rejection of medical science.)
For the record, “the Pentagon had already rescinded the military’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate allowing them to rejoin after Biden signed the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act requiring the change,” CNN reported. (But, see, if Trump doesn’t sign an order to do what had already been done, how will he take credit for it?)
Yeah — it’s going to be a long four years, y’all. This is America on MAGA steroids.
