Trevor Schoonmaker, the organizer of last year’s well-received Prospect.4 triennial, has been named deputy director of Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art in Durham, North Carolina. He has been the museum’s chief curator since 2013, and will remain in that role in addition to his new post as deputy director.
Schoonmaker was named the Nasher Museum’s first curator of contemporary art, a role he took on in 2006. Prior to that, he had been an independent curator in New York. Among the exhibitions he has curated for the Nasher Museum are a 2013 Wangechi Mutu survey, a 2008 Barkley L. Hendricks painting retrospective, and a three-person show of work by Robin Rhode, Mark Bradford, and William Cordova, which opened in 2007.
In a statement, Sarah Schroth, the Nasher Museum’s director, said that Schoonmaker has “proven to be a gifted leader in addition to an exceptional and brilliant curator. This is a promotion long overdue!”
