Dana Schutz will now be represented in the United Kingdom by Thomas Dane Gallery, and will have her first show in October 2019 at the London outfit, which also represents Cecily Brown, Glenn Ligon, Lari Pittman, and Amy Sillman. It will be the artist’s first solo show in the British capital city, and her first in the U.K. since her 2013 outing at the Hepworth Wakefield in England.
Schutz is best known for her vibrantly colored paintings of abstracted individuals in absurd or abject situations. Works that are characteristic of her practice include Face Eater (2004), in which a figure consumes his or her own face, and Swimming, Smoking, Crying (2009), which shows a person doing just that.
Last year, one of Schutz’s paintings for the 2017 Whitney Biennial in New York, depicting the mutilated body of Emmett Till at his open-casket funeral in 1955, generated protests and widespread debate, with the artist and writer Hannah Black penning an open letter that said, in part, “non-Black artists who sincerely wish to highlight the shameful nature of white violence should first of all stop treating Black pain as raw material.”
Schutz had recent one-person shows at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
