Odell Beckham Jr. officially completed his Giants comeback by making the roster. Somehow, the internet is more interested in what happened to his face.
Odell Beckham Jr. aka OBJ spent most of the summer trying to prove there was still a place for him in the NFL — and more specifically, with the franchise where everything started. The 33-year-old receiver signed with the New York Giants in June, returning to the team that selected him No. 12 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft after seven years away. With no guaranteed roster spot waiting for him, Beckham went through training camp and the preseason fighting for one of New York’s final receiver jobs.
OBJ seemingly did enough. He caught seven passes for 76 yards across three preseason games, including three catches for 53 yards in the Giants’ preseason finale against the Jets. Afterward, head coach John Harbaugh said Beckham had done enough to make “an NFL roster,” even if he stopped short at the time of guaranteeing that roster would be New York’s. On Sunday, August 30, the Giants made it official, keeping Beckham as one of the five wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster alongside Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields, Darnell Mooney and Daris Slayton.
That should have been the biggest OBJ story of the weekend. Instead, social media had another question: What happened to his face? A video of Beckham speaking with reporters began making the rounds after he talked about wanting to finally win a championship for the Giants, but plenty of viewers barely seemed to hear what he was saying. They were too busy dissecting his noticeably different appearance. TMZ picked up on the viral conversation as people across social media wondered why Beckham didn’t quite look like the OBJ they remembered.
Naturally, the internet produced about a dozen theories within minutes. Some people immediately jumped to Botox, fillers, or some other kind of cosmetic procedure, while others wondered whether Beckham’s appearance could be connected to medication or something else he may have taken. There is no evidence confirming any of those theories, and Beckham hasn’t publicly said he underwent cosmetic surgery or used anything that altered his appearance. At this point, those explanations are simply people on the internet guessing after watching a short video.
Then there’s the much less dramatic theory: maybe OBJ just looks older. Beckham is 33 now, more than a decade removed from the rookie with the blonde hair who became one of the NFL’s biggest stars almost overnight. He also appeared clean-shaven in the viral clip, which can drastically change how somebody’s face looks when fans are accustomed to seeing them with facial hair. Between different lighting, camera angles, weight changes and simply getting older, some fans argued that everybody might be making something out of nothing.
What makes the whole conversation especially funny is what Beckham was actually trying to discuss. “All I ever wanted to do for the Giants was win a championship,” he told reporters while reflecting on his return. Beckham’s first Giants run made him a three-time Pro Bowler and one of football’s most recognizable stars before New York traded him to Cleveland in 2019. He later won Super LVI with the Los Angeles Rams, spent 2023 with Baltimore and last appeared in a regular-season game with Miami in 2004. Now, after sitting out the 2025 season, he has officially earned another shot with the team where his career began.
So yes, OBJ looks a little different than the player people remember making that famous one-handed catch more than a decade ago. Whether that’s aging, shaving, lighting or something else is Beckham’s business unless he decides to tell everybody otherwise. The part that isn’t speculation is that OBJ survived roster cuts and is officially a New York Giant again—considering how uncertain his NFL future looked coming into the summer, that probably deserves a little more attention than his cheekbones.
