Today, the 2019 Venice Biennale announced the artist list for its main exhibition, which is titled “May You Live in Interesting Times” and curated by Ralph Rugoff. The line-up includes 83 artists, with Kahlil Joseph, Julie Mehretu, Tomás Saraceno, and Danh Vo among the marquee names. ARTnews took a close look at the list, and some analysis follows below.
29: The number of artists born in the 1980s. Gabriel Rico, Frida Orupabo, Alex Da Corte, Jesse Darling, and Ian Cheng are among them.
1: The number of artists born in the 1990s. Augustas Serapinas, who was born in 1990, is the youngest participant in the exhibition.
37: The number of artists who use she/her pronouns. This figure represents less than half of the individuals on the list.
2: The number of collaborations taking place in the Arsenale section. Apichatpong Weerasethakul has teamed up with Tsuyoshi Hisakado, and Korakrit Arunanondchai has joined forces with Alex Gvojic.
1: The number of sets of twins in the biennale. Sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim, co-creators of the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project, share an entry on the list.
1: The number of artists in the 12th Shanghai Biennale, which continues through March 10. Suki Seokyeong Kang is showing work with both fairs.
9: The number of artists who spend at least part of their time in Los Angeles. Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Arthur Jafa, Jill Mulleady, and Kaari Upson are among those living and working in Southern California.

5: The number of artists represented by Sprüth Magers, which has galleries in Berlin, London, and Los Angeles. Those artists are George Condo, Cyprien Gaillard, Jon Rafman, Kaari Upson, and Rosemarie Trockel.
5: The number of artists that show with White Cube, which operates out of London and Hong Kong. They are Michael Armitage, Liu Wei, Christian Marclay, Julie Mehretu, and Danh Vo.
5: The number of artists with Kurimanzutto, which has spaces in Mexico City and New York. They are Nairy Baghramian, Tarek Atoui, Jimmie Durham, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and Danh Vo.
1: The number of collectives participating in the fair. That group is Slavs and Tatars, which was founded in 2006 and is based in Berlin.
