As continuing concern over the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) leads to cancellations of major events around the world, yet another art fair has said it will postpone its upcoming edition. The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF), which hosts editions in the United States and the Netherlands, said that it will postpone its upcoming New York fair, moving it from the original May 8–11 dates to October 31–November 4. The Art Newspaper first reported the news.
Since October 2016, TEFAF has held two annual fairs at the Park Avenue Armory in New York: a fall event focused largely on decorative arts, antiquities, and Old Masters, and a spring affair for modern and contemporary art. Now, this year’s upcoming spring edition will replace the fall one. The next fall New York fair will take place in 2021.
In a statement, Sofie Scheerlinck, TEFAF managing director, said, “In light of the global coronavirus pandemic and the recently introduced travel restrictions we are all truly facing a unique situation. These unprecedented times are new to us all. While we cannot physically meet in these tough times, it is beautiful to see how our art community stands united. We would like to thank all our exhibitors, visitors, sponsors and partners for their understanding and support. Now is the time for us all to remain safe and healthy.”
Earlier this week, Frieze New York, which takes place the same week as TEFAF Spring, canceled its upcoming edition, announcing that the fair would return to New York in 2021. And, earlier this month, TEFAF closed its fair in Maastricht, the Netherlands, four days early, after an exhibitor there tested positive for Covid-19.
The two-week-long Dutch edition of TEFAF opened around the same time as the Armory Show in New York, which went on as planned, as did its numerous satellite fairs. At the time of TEFAF’s early closure, Nanne Dekking, the fair’s board chairman, said, “Given the recent developments in the regions around Maastricht and increasing concerns, we no longer feel it is appropriate to continue as planned.”
