Why is this teaser saying: This film is not about Africa nor is it about Ghana?
In playing with the usual Western stereotypes about Africa as a continent of constant problems and pervasive upheaval, the Teaser “The Black Stars of Ghana – Art District” shows what this series of video interviews with leading contemporary visual artists from Ghana is not about. These video interviews are not about Africa in general or about Africa’s still existing problems. They are also not about Ghana, the country whose prominent contemporary visual artists are presented in this series of film interviews.
In the context of African topics the usual imagery used in Western media is generally characterized by human suffering, lacking infrastructure or typical market and chaotic street scenes, all the kind of problems that you can imagine and think of. Even a film about African contemporary art would frequently be introduced by scenes which focus on the alleged contradiction between the social reality on African streets and the small and exclusive artistic circles safely separated far apart from it. Would a documentary about the leading European contemporary visual artists also be introduced and accompanied by pictures, scenes and imagery showing supermarkets, hospitals, homeless people, beggars, red-light districts, drug-addicts and what other peculiarities you find around the typical central train station in a Western metropolis?
