Tavares Strachan has been selected as the recipient of the 2018 Frontier Art Prize, which comes with a $100,000 grant.
The annual prize was started last year by the VIA Art Fund and the World Frontiers Forum, and aims to recognize artists with a “pioneering spirit.”
Working as part of the Forum’s Convergence Project over the past year, the artist has been collaborating with medical and bio-tech professionals to create art with socioeconomic impact in Sierra Leone, improving access to healthcare and food.
Bridgitt Evans, VIA Art Fund’s founder, said of the decision in a statement to press, “Strachan’s work exhibits curiosity and wanderlust, inquiry and rigor, and openness, empathy and inclusion. He pushes the boundaries of his media and subject matter and asks us to push our boundaries of what we believe and know about ourselves, our bodies, our communities, and the world. Lastly, we recognize Strachan’s generous interest in working collaboratively and his ability to articulate the power of art to catalyze engagement and change.”
