Talks for FUTURE Group, TEFAF, and 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair -ARTnews

During Frieze Week in New York, ARTnews hosted a series of talks engaging issues around the art world. The series kicked off with a FUTURE Group conversation between artist José Parlá and Manon Slome (chief curator and cofounder of No Longer Empty) at Bryce Wolkowitz gallery in Chelsea. Among the subjects discussed was Parlá’s use of legible script in his newest body of work, which marks a distinct departure from his more symbolic use of language in the past. Parlá’s current show “Anonymous Vernacular” will be on view at Bryce Wolkowitz through June 29.

On Friday, ARTnews participated in a talk at the newly relocated 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair with artist Ezra Wube, Pioneer Works founding artistic director Gabriel Florenz, and 1-54 founding director Touria El Glaoui. Moderated by ARTnews deputy editor Andy Battaglia, the discussion touched on art in Ethiopia, international artists in the U.S., and moving an art fair from Brooklyn to Manhattan (where 1-54 debuted this year after four previous editions at Pioneer Works).

ARTnews wrapped up the week with a panel at TEFAF featuring artists Joseph La Piana and Hank Willis Thomas with ARTnews senior editor Alex Greenberger, Fund for Park Avenue president Barbara McLaughlin, and, as the moderator, White Cube artistic director Eric Shiner. The discussion addressed challenges of creating public art, the many obstacles encountered in constructing it, and how outdoor pieces can engage with surrounding communities. ARTnews concluded the festivities with an intimate dinner hosted by Joseph La Piana and Eric Shiner at the Edition Hotel Clock Tower.
