Fans of spirited and playful watches by Swatch—no small contingent in the art world—have a new prospect to mull: whether or not to buy a limited-edition timepiece featuring a design painted by the singular artist Pigcasso. Announced on Tuesday in time with the Chinese Year of the Pig, the new watch—the latest release in the Swiss watchmaker’s ongoing Swatch Art Special series—was painted by perhaps the only pig artist with a noted nose for color and international reach.
Based in South Africa and no stranger to comparisons to Francis Bacon, Pigcasso creates “works of art that surprise and amaze as much as the 450-pounds of talent that run through her pink chubbiness,” as stated by Swatch. Her weight seems to fluctuate (the artist’s own website lists a more corpulent 1,000 pounds), but in any case, her paintings tend toward landscapes that double as nice sites for—again from Pigcasso.org—“a picnic basket fit for her unrivaled appetite. Caramel popcorn and syrup peaches—more please!”
Swatch has courted and catered to artists for decades now, with iconic timepieces designed in the past by Keith Haring and Victor Vasarely, among many others. A recent addition to the collection is a tribute to Piet Mondrian released in collaboration with the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. And another big name collaborated on a Swatch Art Special last year: a Mickey Mouse–memorializing work by Damien Hirst.
