Yarat, a not-for-profit contemporary art space in Baku, Azerbaijan, announced today the appointment of a new artistic director, Suad Garayeva-Maleki, who has been the space’s chief curator since 2014.
The art center, which opened in 2011 in a repurposed naval building, is considered to be one of Central Asia’s foremost contemporary art institutions. In Garayeva-Maleki’s time there, Yarat has hosted works by artists such as Goshka Macuga, Stephen G. Rhodes, Neil Beloufa, Hannah Black, Oscar Murillo, Shirin Neshat, Sitara Ibrahimova, Ilkin Huseynov, and Zamir Suleymanov.
The artistic director position was previously held by Björn Geldhof, who is returning to the PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he was once deputy artistic director.
With its new artistic director, Yarat aims to strengthen its contemporary-art programming, beginning this year with exhibitions for Michelangelo Pistoletto, Aida Mahmudova (who founded Yarat), Shilpa Gupta, and Vajiko Chachkhiani. Future programming will also include an emphasis on Azerbaijani contemporary artists, a release said.
