The clean energy transition involves more than just technology, infrastructure, and investment; it fundamentally concerns people, power, and who gets to shape the future.
At RECESS26, nationally recognized leader, author, and voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams will return to the stage to deliver a compelling opening keynote that examines the link between civic engagement and energy equity.
Building on her impactful 2025 call to “See, Serve, Surge,” Abrams will challenge attendees to broaden their understanding of energy leadership. Drawing from her experience in advancing voting rights, fostering democratic participation, and building movements for systemic change, she will argue that civic power is inextricably linked to clean energy power.
As communities nationwide navigate the opportunities and challenges of the energy transition, Abrams will discuss the importance of participation, representation, and collective action in ensuring the benefits of a clean energy future are distributed equitably. Her keynote will frame the clean energy transition as the next frontier of civil rights organizing and urge leaders from all sectors to engage, collaborate, and take action.
This opening session is essential for anyone interested in the intersection of energy, democracy, equity, and community empowerment.

Now in its fourth year, RECESS was created to ensure that Black, Indigenous, and Brown people, women, and others who have historically been underrepresented are not sidelined in the clean energy transition. Instead, we want to equip and inspire them to take on leadership roles in this movement.
What started as a vision has evolved into a national gathering that brings together leaders from various sectors, including industry, government, philanthropy, higher education, environmental justice, workforce development, and community resilience. The goal is to explore how we can create a more equitable energy future.  Past speakers at RECESS have included Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Stacey Abrams, and Dr. Buu Nygren, the President of the Navajo Nation. Last year, over 600 attendees from 28 states participated. This year, we expect more than 1,000 attendees from across the country, including national thought leaders, policymakers, students, entrepreneurs, and individuals eager to understand their role in the rapidly evolving clean energy economy.
