For its first-ever edition outside New York, the Spring/Break Art Show will stage an fair in Los Angeles. The fair will coincide with the first editions of Frieze Los Angeles and Felix LA, as well as the latest Art Los Angeles Contemporary fair, and it will run from February 16 to 17, with a preview day on February 15.
Spring/Break’s L.A. edition will be held at the Stalls at Skylight Row DTLA—a group of 32 industrial units formerly used to store fruits and vegetables that has never before played home to an art event. Exhibitions, performances, and installations will take place within and around the stalls.
“I think each iteration of Spring/Break is an homage or sort of a benediction to a space and what that space’s legacy and history has been,” Andrew Gori, who cofounded the fair with Ambre Kelly, told ARTnews. “We feel like the work and the themes are always speaking in some way to those spaces.”
Like its 2019 New York counterpart, which opens on March 5, the L.A. iteration of Spring/Break will explore the theme of “Fact and Fiction.” The Los Angeles fair, however, will include an “overwhelming majority” of West Coast artists and exhibitors, according to Gori.
“I think there is something really special happening in L.A. right now, and what we really wanted to make sure we weren’t doing was just air dropping New York,” he said.
Over 40 artists, independent curators, and dealers are slated to take part in Spring/Break’s first L.A. fair, with the nonprofit Project Art, the roaming Gas gallery, the Los Angeles–based, artist-run space Tin Flats, and artist Devin Troy Strother, among others. Gori warned viewers to expect the unexpected. “We’re notoriously mercurial,” he said. “The element of surprise is a really big part of what we do, and we like to surprise people.”
