At its contemporary art evening sale in May in New York, Sotheby’s will offer two paintings on paper by Mark Rothko from the private collection of Canadian collectors Blema and H. Arnold Steinberg.
The pieces, Untitled (Red and Burgundy Over Blue) and Untitled (Red on Red), both from 1969, carry estimates of, respectively, $9 million–$12 million and $7 million–$10 million. This will be the first time they have ever appeared at auction.
The Steinberg’s collection is known to span the postwar decades with a special attention to Color Field paintings. Sotheby’s said it plans to offer more than 100 works from that trove, including pieces by Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, Adolph Gottlieb, and Agnes Martin. All told, the works are estimated to go for more than $40 million on the block.
“The Steinberg Collection represents one of the great private curatorial achievements of the past half century,” Michael Macaulay, Sotheby’s senior international specialist of the contemporary art department, said in a statement to press, “and it is a great privilege to present Blema and Arnold Steinberg’s exceptional vision to the market this year.”
