Maybe absence truly does make the heart grow fonder.
Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph and her husband’s (Vincent Hughes) love story is solid proof that distance doesn’t mean much when both people are on the same page.
The 69-year-old Abbott Elementary star recently opened up about her unconventional marital living arrangements—she and her long-time spouse don’t live together, never have, and seemingly don’t plan to.

Ralph and Hughes met while she was performing on Broadway in Thoroughly Modern Millie. With her Hollywood-based entertainment career and his Pennsylvania-based political profession, they knew early on that their lives and lines of work would keep them in different cities.

“I’m very fortunate. The man I’m married to is Senator Vincent Hughes, seventh Senatorial District of Pennsylvania..but when you fall in love with someone, you realize some things. He’s not leaving his career in Philadelphia. I’m not leaving Hollywood. And when you have kids, the stakes get even higher,” Ralph explained to PEOPLE.
So, they decided to live in separate states…a choice that has aided in keeping them together for nearly 20 years. The couple will celebrate their second decade of marriage this July, an accomplishment Ralph proudly states is “all good” considering some couples don’t even make it two years.

“We decided we’d see each other every two weeks, and honestly, it’s been amazing,” Ralph shares. “When I see him, it’s all love. And when it’s time to say goodbye, it’s ‘Bye-bye, see you soon.’ It works. Life is good…He has his own life, and I have mine… He’s not worried about status or any of that. We let each other be who we are, and that’s a beautiful thing,” she said.
