A white woman in South Africa became the first person in its country’s history to go to prison for racism, BuzzFeed News reports.
Vicki Momberg was sentenced to up to three years in prison over a February 2016 incident in Johannesburg where she was caught on camera making racist comments toward black police officers who had responded to a call she made about a reported robbery.
Momberg was seen on video referring to black cops as “kaffirs,” which is a derogatory term for black South Africans during apartheid.
“The kaffirs here in Jo’burg are terrible,” Momberg says to someone she’s speaking with on the phone. “I tried to phone the police and every single person that answers the phone is a black person and they are clueless, clueless!”
Warning: Graphic language
A white officer approached Momberg to speak to her when she told him how she felt about black people in Johannesburg.
“I don’t care what anyone says, I don’t like a single black in Jo’burg,” Momberg can be heard saying to the officer.
She also threatened to run over and shoot any black South African that she was.
“If I see a kaffir I will drive him over,” she said. “If I have a gun, I will shoot everybody.”
According to BuzzFeed, Momberg was charged with a similar crime in 2006. She allegedly told police that she wanted only white, colored or Indian people to help her, but not black people.
Many on social media celebrated the Momberg’s sentencing by a South African court including the country’s Arts and Culture Minister.
We welcome the prison sentence handed down today on Real Estate Agent #VickyMomberg who has been sentenced to 3 years in prison for her racist rant, of which 1 year is suspended. This will serve as a deterrent & a clear indication that there is no room for racism in South Africa.

During her November 2017 trial, Momberg claimed that she was “intimidated” by law enforcement because the person who allegedly robbed her was black.
She will have one year of her sentence suspended if she does not commit the crime again, BuzzFeed News reports.
