Los Angeles–based artist Christina Quarles has joined the roster of L.A.’s Regen Projects. The artist will have a solo show at the gallery next spring.
Quarles’s paintings explore the ways in which the human body can appear fragmented, compressed, stretched, and ambiguous. She accordingly represents people through semi-figurative methods. The works, painted in vibrant colors, are explorations of how one’s identities—the artist identifies as being a queer, cisgender woman of mixed race, though she is often mistaken for being white—can cause these distortions: the mental and emotional stress of being are here rendered physical.
Her work is currently on view in the Hammer Museum’s “Made in L.A. 2018” biennial, and was recently included in the group exhibition “Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon” at the New Museum and “Fictions” at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
