Next month, four galleries will join forces to launch La Maison de Rendez-Vous, a space in Brussels that will be operated by LambdaLambdaLambda, of Prishtina, Kosovo; Lulu, of Mexico City; Misako & Rosen, of Tokyo; and Park View/Paul Soto, of Brussels and Los Angeles.
The proceedings at 23 Avenue Jef Lambeaux will kick off on January 18 with the opening of the group exhibition “La peinture abstraite,” which includes works by Shimon Minamikawa, Anna Schachinger, Lui Shtini, and Kate Spencer Stewart.
“The project began with Paul [Soto, owner of Park View/Paul Soto] wanting to open a second space in Brussels, and then just developed momentum out of our time together in Buenos Aires and other cities,” the dealers told ARTnews in a jointly signed email. “We also have similar approaches to programming which tends to be more curatorial than commercial. The fact that we all inhabit such different geographies and times zones is a bonus in terms of the diversity that we’ll naturally bring to the table.”
The Brussels gallery’s name comes from a 1965 Alain Robbe-Grillet novella about one night in Hong Kong, with the same story told by several different characters. The gallerists decided to lift that tome’s title when Chris Sharp, director of Lulu, said the Robbe-Grillet novella was his favorite book. “The content of the novel also seemed appropriate since all the characters in the book, and hence La Maison, are always shifting and changing places, just as we will do in running the space together,” they said.
