North Carolina could be making hip-hop history thanks to a proposal by state Senator Natalie Murdock. The Durham Democrat recently filed a bill seeking to declare Petey Pablo’s iconic 2001 track “Raise Up” the official state hip-hop song. Known for its unforgettable call to action, “Take your shirt off, twist it ‘round your head, spin it like a helicopter,” the song has long been an anthem for proud North Carolinians.
The cultural significance of “Raise Up” runs deep. Released over 20 years ago, this Grammy-nominated hit by Greenville native Petey Pablo, whose real name is Moses Barrett III, has become a symbol of pride and unity for the Tar Heel State. The song’s lyrics and energy capture the essence of North Carolina, from small towns to bustling cities.

“Raise Up” has also embedded itself in the state’s sports culture. At University of North Carolina football games, the Tar Heels’ marching band plays the song during pivotal defensive stops on third downs. Meanwhile, the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes adopted the track as a celebratory anthem, blaring it after every goal scored. These moments showcase how the track has resonated with fans across generations.
Murdock’s bill is part of a broader effort to celebrate the state’s heritage and unique contributions. This proposal comes on the heels of another bill seeking to establish a Wrestling Hall of Fame in North Carolina, named after legendary wrestler and Charlotte resident Ric Flair.
Petey Pablo’s influence isn’t limited to music. Recently, he partnered with Neuse River Brewing Company to create “Petey’s Pale Ale,” bridging music and local craft beer within the cultural fabric of North Carolina.
Whether spinning rally towels at games or lifting brews in celebration, North Carolinians have embraced “Raise Up” as much more than just a hit song. If this bill passes, it will officially cement Pablo’s anthem as a piece of state history.
