President Donald Trump drew boos from sections of the crowd during Trump’s World Cup final appearance at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, where he joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino to present the trophy after Spain defeated Argentina.

As the pair appeared on stage for the ceremony, audible boos came from sections of the crowd, according to video shared from the stadium and reporting by USA TODAY. The reaction followed a mixed reception Trump received earlier in the evening.
Before kickoff, Trump arrived at the stadium and was briefly shown on the venue’s giant video boards during the pre-match festivities. The appearance drew scattered boos after the U.S. national anthem. Trump watched the match from a suite alongside Infantino, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian officials, family members and other invited guests. Trump’s World Cup final appearance marked the president’s first match attendance during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the tournament being hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Trump’s involvement in the tournament had already attracted attention earlier this month. During the competition, he publicly asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the red card issued to U.S. men’s national team forward Folarin Balogun in the Round of 32. FIFA later suspended Balogun’s red card for a year, allowing him to return to play for for the United States who ultimately suffered a 4-1 loss to Belgium.
The World Cup final ceremony also continued the president’s recent pattern of attending major sporting events during his second term. Over the past two years, Trump has appeared at the Super Bowl, the Daytona 500 and Game 3 of the NBA Finals, the only game the New York Knicks lost to the San Antonio Spurs on their way to their first NBA Championship in 53 years.
The reaction inside MetLife Stadium quickly became one of the most talked-about moments from the post-match celebrations, with videos of the boos circulating widely across social media shortly after Spain lifted the World Cup trophy.
