Courtney A. Kemp is looking to strike gold on Netflix with her new crime drama Nemesis, like she did on Starz with her hit show Power.
Nemesis is the first series to be greenlit under Kemp’s overall deal with the streaming giant. It is co-created by Kemp and Tani Marole and marks Marole’s series writing debut.
Speaking with Variety, Kemp said of the series, “Tani and I are excited to bring a hard-hitting psychological crime drama to Netflix, specific in location, but broad in universal themes of right and wrong, love and loss, and loyalty vs self-preservation.” She continued, “We are grateful to Bela, Peter, Jinny and Nne for their support, keeping this production in Los Angeles and getting local crews back to work.”
Per Variety the logline for the show reads:
“‘Nemesis’ is the story of two men on either side of the law, the tale of what happens when an unstoppable force (an expert criminal) meets an immovable object (a brilliant police detective). What starts as a series that aims to subvert the heist genre at every turn, amped with thrilling life-or-death stakes, family dynamics and explosive action, actually gives birth to an exploration of what drives us, sustains us, and ultimately destroys us.”
Sounds lit, and an instant binge session is coming. Netflix is already confident it has a hit on its hands with Nemesis.
“Viewers are in for a ride with ‘Nemesis,’ Courtney and Tani’s bold take on the crime drama genre,” said Nne Ebong, vice president of studio scripted series at Netflix per Variety. “Courtney’s shows have proven to dominate culture and conversation, and it’s exciting to have this be the first project from our creative partnership.”
As for who will star in the series, Variety reports that Y’lan Noel (Insecure, The First Purge) as Coltrane Wilder, Matthew Law (Abbott Elementary, Ahsoka) as Isaiah Stiles, Cleopatra Coleman (Black Rabbit, Clipped) as Ebony Wilder, Tre Hale (All-American, Platonic) as Darren “Stro” Stroman, Domenick Lombardozzi (The Wire, Power, Tulsa King) as Dave Cerullo, Jonnie Park (Quiz Lady, Power, Raya and the Last Dragon) as Chris Choi, and Ariana Guerra (CSI: Vegas, Helstrom) as Yvette Cruz.
We can’t wait to see a trailer for this one, we’re pretty sure it will end up on our Black Watch list.
